With lakhs of youths registered with employment exchanges but government recruitments remaining limited, the debate over employment opportunities has intensified in Chhattisgarh.
RAIPUR: The political debate over employment and government jobs has intensified in Chhattisgarh, with questions being raised over the large number of youths registered with employment offices compared with the relatively limited number of government appointments.
Chhattisgarh Housing Board Chairman Anurag Singh Deo said it would be incorrect to view government jobs and employment as the same thing. He said the government conducts recruitment according to departmental requirements and budgetary capacity, while employment opportunities are also being generated through various other sectors.
Employment registrations increase every year
Anurag Singh Deo said the number of young people entering the job market naturally increases every year as new batches of graduates and postgraduates complete their education and begin looking for employment.
According to him, this is one of the reasons why registrations with employment offices continue to rise. The registration figures, therefore, should not be directly equated with the number of government jobs available.
Government recruitment based on requirements
Responding to questions over government recruitment, Deo said appointments are made according to the requirements of different departments.
He cited sectors such as education, police and forests, where recruitment is carried out from time to time. He also said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, recruitment for teachers and several other positions is expected to provide additional opportunities for young people in the state.
Government jobs and employment are different
Deo sought to draw a distinction between a government job and employment while responding to opposition criticism.
He explained that when large-scale housing construction takes place, employment is not limited to workers directly involved at the construction site. Economic activity also increases in sectors such as cement, transportation, labour and related services.
His argument was that the broader employment ecosystem should also be considered rather than measuring employment only through government appointments.
Mahatari Vandan scheme cited as an example
Deo also referred to the Mahatari Vandan scheme, saying that financial assistance received by women eventually enters the local economy and contributes to economic activity.
According to him, income and employment generated through different economic channels should also be considered when assessing the overall employment situation.
Government jobs have natural limitations
On protests and demands for government jobs, Deo said there is a practical limit to the number of positions the government can create.
He said recruitment depends on factors such as the number of sanctioned posts, departmental requirements and the state’s financial capacity. Therefore, it cannot be assumed that every person seeking employment will receive a government job.
Government says it is working on both fronts
Deo said the government’s efforts are not restricted to government recruitment. Along with filling vacancies in government departments, the government is also working to create employment opportunities through other sectors and economic activities.
The debate over the gap between employment registrations and government appointments is likely to remain a significant political issue in Chhattisgarh. While the opposition is portraying the gap as evidence of inadequate employment opportunities, the government maintains that employment cannot be measured solely by the number of government jobs.
The key question now is whether the government’s broader employment strategy will translate into sufficient and sustainable opportunities for the state’s large population of job-seeking youth.
