New Delhi |: The Government of India has summoned Meta’s global leadership team for discussions scheduled on August 5 and 6, amid growing concerns over the temporary removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Instagram and Facebook post, the platform’s handling of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), and questions surrounding algorithmic transparency and regulatory compliance.
The high-level meeting is expected to focus on multiple issues, including content moderation, artificial intelligence-driven filtering systems, verified account protections, and Meta’s adherence to Indian laws governing digital platforms.
Government to Raise Multiple Concerns
Speaking to reporters, S. Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, said the government would seek explanations from Meta regarding several issues that have recently come under scrutiny.
According to Krishnan, discussions will include:
- Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) enforcement.
- AI-generated and manipulated content.
- Safeguards for verified and high-profile accounts.
- Content moderation practices.
- Compliance with Indian regulatory requirements.
He stated that a global technology company like Meta should possess the technical capability to prevent such incidents and ensure the smooth functioning of its systems.
Meeting Comes After PM Modi’s Post Was Temporarily Removed
The meeting gains significance following the temporary removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Instagram and Facebook post earlier this month.
The post featured the Prime Minister addressing India’s youth and highlighting the government’s commitment to taking strict action against paper leak incidents.
According to government officials, the post was briefly restricted by Meta before being restored.
Meta later informed the government that the removal occurred due to an AI-powered automated content filtering error, which unintentionally affected the original post while reviewing shared copies circulating on the platform.
However, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) reportedly found the explanation unsatisfactory, stating that such technical failures should be addressed promptly by a company with Meta’s technological capabilities.
Government Questions AI-Based Content Moderation
Officials indicated that the government wants to understand why Meta’s AI-driven moderation systems failed in this instance.
Krishnan said the government intends to seek clarification on:
- Why automated systems failed.
- Whether sufficient safeguards exist for verified public figures.
- How AI-generated information is being evaluated.
- What corrective measures Meta has implemented.
He emphasized that digital platforms operating in India must clearly understand the country’s legal framework and ensure full regulatory compliance.
CSAM Enforcement Also Under Scrutiny
Apart from the Prime Minister’s post, the government is expected to question Meta regarding its handling of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM).
The issue has remained under regulatory scrutiny after allegations concerning paid advertisements and the effectiveness of Meta’s systems in detecting and preventing such illegal content.
Government officials had previously issued a notice to Meta seeking an explanation regarding the matter.
During the upcoming discussions, authorities are expected to review the company’s actions and future strategy to strengthen enforcement against illegal content.
Algorithm Transparency May Be Discussed
According to government sources, the meeting is not limited to technical glitches alone.

The company stated that such posts would now undergo multiple levels of review, including oversight by senior company officials, to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents occurring in the future.
On July 28, Meta also shared details of these enhanced safeguards with the government in a formal communication.
Parliamentary Committee Raises Similar Concerns
The issue has also drawn attention in Parliament.
On Tuesday, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, alleged that certain social media platforms were promoting anti-government and anti-democratic content while failing to adequately prevent the spread of illegal material involving women and children.
He said the committee had unanimously recommended that social media platforms could lose their “safe harbour” protection if they fail to comply with Indian laws.
The parliamentary committee had also questioned Meta officials earlier this week regarding algorithmic bias, with members reportedly expressing concern that objectionable content remains accessible while legitimate content is sometimes removed.
Global Leadership Called for Direct Accountability
Unlike previous engagements involving local representatives, the government has called Meta’s global executives to participate in the discussions.
Officials believe that direct engagement with the company’s international leadership will ensure that concerns raised by Indian authorities receive attention at the highest corporate level.
The move underscores the government’s intention to seek greater accountability, transparency, and compliance from one of the world’s largest technology companies.
