Indian Railways Approves ₹163 Crore Electric Traction Upgrade for Parbhani–Mudkhed Section to Boost Freight Capacity and High-Speed Operations

New Delhi : Indian Railways has approved a ₹163 crore infrastructure project to modernize the electric traction system on the Parbhani–Mudkhed double-line section in the Nanded Division of South Central Railway (SCR). The project is aimed at strengthening railway infrastructure, increasing network capacity, improving energy efficiency, and supporting the operation of high-speed passenger trains, including the Vande Bharat Express, while enhancing freight movement on one of India’s busiest rail corridors.

The approval marks another significant step in Indian Railways’ long-term strategy to modernize its electrical infrastructure and prepare high-density routes for future transportation demands.

Major Upgrade to a Modern 2×25 kV Traction System

The approved project involves upgrading the existing 1×25 kV electric traction system to a more advanced 2×25 kV electric traction system across 164 track kilometers.

The modernization will include:

  • Conversion from 1×25 kV to 2×25 kV electrification technology.
  • Augmentation of power supply infrastructure to handle higher electrical loads.
  • Installation of additional electrical equipment to improve reliability and operational efficiency.
  • Strengthening of the traction power network to support heavier and faster train operations.

The 2×25 kV traction system is widely recognized for providing improved voltage stability, reduced transmission losses, and greater capacity for operating multiple trains simultaneously.

Strategic Importance of the Parbhani–Mudkhed Section

The Parbhani–Mudkhed section forms part of the strategically important Highly Utilized Network (HUN) Route-9, one of India’s critical railway freight and passenger corridors.

The corridor connects several major cities and industrial regions, including:

  • Indore
  • Khandwa
  • Akola
  • Purna
  • Mudkhed
  • Secunderabad
  • Mahbubnagar
  • Dhone

Given its strategic location, the route plays a vital role in transporting both passengers and freight across western, central, and southern India.
