What Was the Kargil War?
The Kargil War began in May 1999 after Pakistani intruders occupied strategic Indian positions across the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir. Their objective was to disrupt National Highway 1A, the critical route connecting Srinagar and Leh, thereby threatening India’s military logistics.
In response, India launched Operation Vijay, a carefully planned military campaign aimed at reclaiming the occupied mountain peaks. Over more than two months, Indian soldiers fought in extreme weather conditions, scaling steep, snow-covered cliffs under continuous enemy fire.

At the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth, senior military commanders, and other dignitaries laid wreaths in memory of the fallen soldiers.
The ceremony featured:
- Floral tributes at the memorial.
- A helicopter flypast, during which flower petals were showered over the memorial.
- Participation by senior Army officers and government representatives.

The previous evening, the Indian Army organized “Shaurya Sandhya”, a commemorative cultural event dedicated to the heroes of Operation Vijay, celebrating their valor and honoring the families of the martyrs.
