West Bengal Leader Claims 10,000 Illegal Immigrants Deported, 1,800 More in Detention

Kolkata : A senior West Bengal political leader has claimed that 10,000 illegal immigrants have already been deported from the state, while another 1,800 individuals are currently being held in 12 detention (holding) centers awaiting deportation. The remarks came during a discussion on the Governor’s Address in the state legislative assembly.

Addressing lawmakers, the leader drew a sharp distinction between Indian citizens and illegal immigrants, stating that those who entered India unlawfully would continue to face action under the law.

They are illegal immigrants, not Indian citizens,” he said, emphasizing that the state’s enforcement measures are focused solely on individuals who entered the country without legal authorization.

10,000 Reportedly Deported

According to the leader, authorities have already removed approximately 10,000 illegal immigrants who did not qualify for citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and had allegedly entered India through unauthorized routes.

He further claimed that 1,800 additional individuals remain in 12 holding centers and are being deported in phases across the international border.

State Funds Reserved for Citizens

The leader stated that public tax revenue should be used exclusively for the welfare of lawful residents and Indian citizens, not for those staying in the country illegally.

He said government resources would instead be directed toward public welfare programs, including:

  • Food security initiatives
  • Affordable housing and electricity schemes
  • Old-age pensions
  • Widow assistance programs
  • Employment opportunities for youth
  • School infrastructure improvements
  • Expansion of clean drinking water facilities

He added that the government would not spend public money on providing long-term food, clothing, or medical care for individuals identified as illegal immigrants.

Policy: Hand Over Detainees to BSF

Explaining the government’s approach, the leader said authorities are implementing Government of India regulations by detaining illegal immigrants and handing them over to the Border Security Force (BSF) for further action, rather than housing them in state prisons.

He described this as the state’s official enforcement policy for dealing with illegal border crossings.

Assurance to Indian Citizens

The leader also sought to reassure Indian citizens, stating that no lawful resident should fear government action regardless of religion, community, or political affiliation.

He said that enforcement measures are directed only at individuals who entered the country illegally and are not intended to affect legitimate Indian citizens.

Border Security Strengthened

The leader further announced that 142.79 acres of land have been transferred to the Border Security Force (BSF) to facilitate the construction of border fencing.

He claimed that nearly 600 kilometers of border fencing is expected to be completed over the coming months, strengthening surveillance and helping prevent future illegal crossings.

He also criticized the previous state government’s handling of border security, arguing that stronger enforcement is necessary to protect the state’s borders.

Focus on National Security

Concluding his remarks, the leader said that border security, illegal immigration control, and public safety remain among the government’s highest priorities. He asserted that the administration would continue implementing strict measures to curb unauthorized entry while safeguarding the rights of Indian citizens.
