GRSE Emerges Lowest Bidder for ₹40 Crore Electric Tug Contract at Kolkata Port

NEW DELHI, India — Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) has emerged as the Lowest Bidder (L1) for a contract valued at approximately ₹40 crore to design, build, and deliver a 15-Ton Electric Bollard Pull Tug for Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK). The development marks another significant milestone in the state-owned shipbuilder’s expanding portfolio of green maritime solutions.

The company disclosed the development through a regulatory filing submitted to the stock exchanges on June 23, 2026, confirming that it secured the L1 position after the financial bids for the tender were opened by Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port, Kolkata.

According to the filing, the project involves the construction and supply of one 15-Ton Electric Bollard Pull Tug, with an estimated contract value of around ₹40 crore. While GRSE has secured the lowest financial bid, the company clarified that the formal award of the contract remains subject to the successful completion of the tender process and the issuance of the official Letter of Award (LoA) by the port authority.

The proposed vessel will be an electric-powered tug, reflecting the growing global and domestic emphasis on clean energy, low-emission maritime operations, and environmentally sustainable port infrastructure. Electric tugboats help reduce fuel consumption, lower carbon emissions, minimize operational noise, and support the maritime industry’s transition toward green shipping technologies.

The project is expected to further strengthen GRSE’s position in the rapidly growing green shipbuilding segment. Traditionally recognized as one of India’s leading defense shipbuilders, the company has been steadily expanding its presence in the commercial shipbuilding, port vessel, and specialized marine solutions markets.

Over the past few years, GRSE has diversified its product portfolio by participating in projects involving tugs, dredgers, patrol vessels, ferries, and other specialized marine platforms for ports and government agencies. The latest bid success highlights the company’s ability to leverage its shipbuilding expertise beyond defense manufacturing while supporting India’s broader Maritime Vision and green infrastructure initiatives.

Industry analysts believe that increasing investments in electric and hybrid marine vessels are creating new growth opportunities for Indian shipyards as ports seek cleaner and more energy-efficient solutions. If the contract is formally awarded, the project will further reinforce GRSE’s reputation as a leading builder of advanced, innovative, and environmentally friendly vessels for both defense and commercial applications.

The successful bid also aligns with India’s ongoing efforts to modernize port infrastructure, promote sustainable maritime transportation, and accelerate the adoption of green technologies across the country’s shipping and logistics sectors.
