New Delhi, India | Millions of Indian households are facing another inflation-driven setback after state-owned oil marketing companies increased the price of domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders by ₹29, effective June 7, 2026.
Following the revision, the price of a standard 14.2-kilogram household LPG cylinder in New Delhi has increased from ₹913 to ₹942. The price hike affects both regular consumers and beneficiaries of the government’s flagship Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), a welfare program designed to provide clean cooking fuel to low-income families.
Ujjwala Beneficiaries Also Impacted
Although the Indian government has maintained the existing ₹300 subsidy for eligible PMUY households, beneficiaries will still have to pay more because the subsidy amount remains unchanged while the market price of LPG has increased.
As a result:
- Previous effective price for PMUY beneficiaries in Delhi: ₹613
- New effective price after the increase: ₹642
- Increase in consumer cost: ₹29 per cylinder
The development means that low-income households enrolled in the scheme will face additional financial pressure despite continuing government support.
About the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana
Launched in 2016 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana aims to provide clean cooking fuel to economically disadvantaged families and reduce dependence on traditional fuels such as firewood, coal, and dung cakes.
According to government data, more than 105 million (10.5 crore) free LPG connections have been distributed under the program since its inception.
Current Subsidy Rules
The scheme’s subsidy structure has undergone revisions over the years.
Annual Subsidized Cylinder Limit
Initially, beneficiaries received subsidies on up to 12 cylinders per year. Under the current policy, however, the ₹300 subsidy is available on only 9 LPG cylinders annually.
Any cylinders purchased beyond this limit must be bought at the full market price.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for a PMUY connection, applicants must meet several conditions:
- The connection must be issued in the name of a woman aged 18 years or older.
- The applicant’s household must not already possess an LPG connection.
- The family must satisfy government eligibility criteria for economically weaker households.
Benefits Provided Under the Scheme
First-time beneficiaries receive a complete starter package at no cost, including:
- A filled LPG cylinder
- A pressure regulator
- A safety hose pipe
- A two-burner cooking stove
- A DGCC safety booklet
These provisions are intended to ensure safe and convenient adoption of clean cooking fuel.
How to Apply
Eligible women can apply for the scheme through:
- Their nearest authorized LPG distributor or gas agency
- Online portals operated by government-owned oil companies
Applicants are generally required to submit:
- Aadhaar Card (national identity document)
- Proof of residence
- Ration card
- Bank account details
- Completed Know Your Customer (KYC) documentation
Rising Cost of Living Concerns
The latest LPG price increase comes at a time when many Indian households are already dealing with higher living expenses. While the government continues to provide financial support through the PMUY subsidy, consumer groups note that repeated increases in fuel prices can significantly affect household budgets, particularly for lower-income families.
Officials maintain that the Ujjwala Scheme remains a critical component of India’s clean-energy and public-health strategy, helping millions of families transition away from polluting cooking fuels and improving indoor air quality across rural and underserved communities.
