Matter arising from Calcutta High Court order to be taken up after eight weeks
New Delhi : The Supreme Court has referred a dispute between Sajal Dutta and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to mediation, with the parties consenting to the appointment of former Chief Justice of India Justice B.R. Gavai as mediator.
The matter was heard on September 23, 2026, by a Bench comprising Justice M.M. Sundresh and Justice Prasanna B. Varale. The proceedings relate to Special Leave Petition (Civil) No. 10755/2026, arising from an order passed by the Calcutta High Court on December 24, 2025.
According to the Supreme Court’s Record of Proceedings, the appointment of Justice B.R. Gavai was made by consent of the parties. The Court requested the former CJI to act as the mediator to facilitate discussions between the parties.
Mediator to Fix Hearing Schedule and Fees
The Supreme Court has requested the mediator to determine the date and time for hearing the parties. Justice Gavai will also decide his fees for undertaking the mediation process.
The Court has directed that the matter be listed again after eight weeks.
Senior Counsels Appear for Parties
Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi appeared on behalf of the petitioner, Sajal Dutta, while Senior Advocate K. Parameshwar represented the respondents.
The mediation referral is aimed at providing the parties an opportunity to resolve their dispute through a consensual process while the matter remains before the Supreme Court.
