Heavy rainfall triggers waterlogging across Raipur; dramatic rescue near Jagannath Temple in Gayatri Nagar
Raipur: Heavy rainfall in Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur on Sunday led to waterlogging in several parts of the city and exposed concerns over the drainage system. A major accident was narrowly averted near the Jagannath Temple in Gayatri Nagar, where a vehicle was swept away by the strong current of an overflowing drain.
A youth who was reportedly travelling in the vehicle was rescued with the help of local residents, who threw a rope towards him and pulled him to safety.
A video of the incident has also surfaced, showing people attempting to rescue the youth amid heavy rain and the strong flow of water.
Vehicle Swept Away in Strong Current
Heavy rain began in Raipur at around 1 pm on Sunday and quickly affected several parts of the city.
Continuous rainfall resulted in waterlogging on major roads and in low-lying areas. During this period, the strong flow of water near Gayatri Nagar’s Jagannath Temple reportedly swept away a vehicle.
The force of the water was reportedly strong enough to prevent the vehicle from being controlled.
People present at the spot immediately began efforts to rescue the youth.
Youth Rescued with Help of Rope
As the youth became trapped amid the strong flow of water, people at the scene threw a rope towards him.
With the help of the rope and coordinated efforts by those present, the youth was pulled out of the drain and brought to safety.
The timely intervention of local residents helped prevent what could have been a serious accident.
Heavy Rain Exposes Drainage Concerns
The heavy rainfall also caused waterlogging in several parts of Raipur.
Water accumulated on roads, affecting traffic movement and making it difficult for pedestrians and motorists to move through several areas.
Residents in some localities were forced to navigate through waterlogged roads as the city’s drainage system struggled to cope with the intensity of the rainfall.
The incident near Gayatri Nagar has once again highlighted the risks posed by overflowing drains and inadequate water drainage during periods of heavy rain.
Authorities and residents are urging people to exercise extreme caution around flooded roads, drains and areas experiencing strong water currents during the monsoon.
