3 Years of Chandrayaan-3: How Vikram Lander Made India the First to Soft-Land Near the Moon’s South Pole

Three years after Chandrayaan-3’s historic landing, India’s lunar achievement continues to shape the country’s space ambitions

New Delhi : India scripted a historic chapter in space exploration when the Vikram Lander of Chandrayaan-3 successfully soft-landed near the Moon’s south polar region.

The achievement made India the first country to successfully soft-land near the lunar south polar region and the fourth country overall to achieve a controlled soft landing on the Moon.

Three years later, as India observes National Space Day 2026, the Chandrayaan-3 mission continues to be remembered as a defining achievement for the country’s space programme.

The Historic Landing

After a carefully controlled powered-descent sequence, Vikram touched down on the lunar surface at a site subsequently named Shiv Shakti Point.

The successful landing demonstrated India’s capability to perform a highly precise lunar landing in a challenging environment.

The region around the lunar south pole features rugged terrain, extreme temperature variations and permanently shadowed areas. Scientists believe some of these shadowed regions may contain deposits of water ice.

The mission therefore represented not only a technological achievement but also an important scientific opportunity for future lunar exploration.

Why the Lunar South Pole Is Important

The lunar south polar region has attracted considerable interest from scientists and space agencies around the world.

Unlike many earlier lunar landing sites located closer to the Moon’s equatorial regions, the south polar area presents unique scientific and technological challenges.

Its importance includes:

  • Potential water ice: Permanently shadowed craters may preserve water ice because sunlight does not reach their floors.
  • Unique geological information: Studying the region can provide valuable information about the Moon’s formation and evolution.

Pragyan Rover Began Lunar Exploration

Following the landing, the Vikram Lander deployed the Pragyan rover.

The rover was designed to travel across the lunar surface and conduct scientific experiments, while the lander carried its own suite of instruments.

Together, the lander and rover gathered valuable data about the lunar environment, including measurements related to the surface and subsurface characteristics.

The mission demonstrated India’s growing capability to conduct increasingly sophisticated robotic exploration beyond Earth.

A Moment That United the Nation

The landing on the evening of 23 August 2023 was watched live by millions of Indians.

When Vikram successfully touched down, celebrations broke out across the country. The achievement was widely recognised as a significant milestone in India’s space journey.

The mission also demonstrated the importance of years of scientific research, engineering development, testing and mission planning carried out by scientists and engineers at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

National Space Day 2026

India observes National Space Day on 23 August to commemorate the successful Chandrayaan-3 landing.

In 2026, the country marks the third National Space Day, with the theme “Towards Viksit Bharat – Innovating, Collaborating and Aspiring to Global Space Leadership.”

The occasion provides an opportunity to celebrate India’s achievements in space science while looking ahead to more ambitious missions.

Chandrayaan-3 and India’s Future in Space

The success of Chandrayaan-3 has strengthened India’s ambitions for future human and robotic space exploration.

Upcoming programmes, including Gaganyaan, are expected to expand India’s capabilities in human spaceflight, while future lunar missions could build on the scientific and technological experience gained through Chandrayaan-3.

The Moon is also becoming increasingly important in global space exploration because of its scientific value and the possibility of using lunar resources to support future missions.

Three Years Later, A Landmark That Continues to Inspire

Three years after Vikram’s historic touchdown, Chandrayaan-3 remains one of the most important milestones in India’s modern space programme.

The mission demonstrated that complex lunar operations can be achieved through indigenous technology, careful planning and sustained scientific effort.
