Teacher Reaches School in Intoxicated State, Video Goes Viral; DEO Orders Suspension

Mungeli: A sensational incident that has severely dented the credibility of the district education department has come to light in Mungeli district of Chhattisgarh. An assistant teacher posted at Government Primary School, Lakhasar, under the Lormi development block, allegedly reached the school in an intoxicated state. The incident reportedly occurred on January 5, 2026, and came into the public eye after a video related to the matter went viral on social media.

Following the circulation of the video, the education department swung into action. After a preliminary inquiry, the District Education Officer (DEO), Mungeli, ordered the immediate suspension of the teacher, identified as Laxman Kolam.

The Block Education Officer (BEO) confirmed the incident and verbally informed DEO L.P. Dahire, recommending prompt disciplinary action against the concerned teacher. The initial investigation clearly established that the teacher’s conduct was in complete violation of government service rules. Reaching a school under the influence of alcohol was considered a serious threat to student safety and discipline, and also caused significant damage to the public image of the education department.

Taking the matter seriously, the DEO stated that the act constituted a violation of Rule 3 (1, 2, and 3) of the Chhattisgarh Civil Services Conduct Rules, 1965. Exercising powers under Rule 9(a) of the Chhattisgarh Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1966, the DEO suspended assistant teacher Laxman Kolam with immediate effect.

During the suspension period, the teacher’s headquarters has been fixed at the office of the Block Education Officer, Lormi. As per rules, he will be entitled to subsistence allowance during this period.

This strict action by the education department is being seen as a clear message that any negligence or indiscipline in the conduct of teachers will not be tolerated, especially when it concerns student safety and the dignity of the education system.
