Chennai, India — Prominent actor-turned-politician Vijay, founder and president of the political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, officially launched his election campaign on Monday from the Perambur constituency, marking a significant moment in Tamil Nadu’s evolving political landscape.
Emotional Appeal to Voters
Addressing a large gathering, Vijay made an emotional pitch, urging citizens to give him “one opportunity” to serve. Positioning himself as both a “brother and son” to the people, he said the election represents a defining chance to uplift an entire generation.
He emphasized that his political journey is driven by a desire to repay public trust, adding that he has sacrificed personal comforts to dedicate himself fully to public service.
Assets Declaration
As part of his nomination filing, Vijay disclosed total assets worth approximately ₹624 crore (around $75 million USD). According to his election affidavit:
- Movable Assets: ₹404 crore, including cash reserves, investments, gold holdings, and a collection of luxury vehicles alongside a modest TVS XL Super.
- Immovable Assets: ₹220 crore, comprising real estate properties located in Chennai and Kodaikanal.
- His wife, Sangeetha Vijay, declared movable assets worth ₹15 crore and immovable assets valued at ₹25 lakh.
Sharp Criticism of State Government
During his campaign speech, Vijay strongly criticized Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
He accused the government of failing to ensure public safety, particularly for women and children, despite having control over the police department for five years. Vijay also alleged widespread corruption, citing issues such as irregularities in the state-run Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation and a reported cash-for-jobs scandal linked to municipal administration.
Campaign Expansion and Security Concerns
Following his Perambur rally, Vijay continued campaigning in Kolathur. However, his planned visit to Villivakkam was canceled due to insufficient police security arrangements, raising concerns about campaign logistics and safety.
A New Political Contender
Vijay’s entry into politics under the banner of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has generated significant attention, particularly among youth voters and his vast fan base. His campaign blends cinematic popularity with populist messaging, positioning him as a fresh alternative in Tamil Nadu’s traditionally Dravidian political arena.
As the election approaches, all eyes remain on whether Vijay can convert his mass appeal into electoral success in one of India’s most politically dynamic states.
