Security Breach at Jagannath Temple: Man Wearing Fake Indian Army Uniform Detained in Puri

Puri, Odisha: A major security breach has raised concerns at the Jagannath Temple in Puri after a man allegedly posing as an Indian Army officer was detained while attempting to move inside the highly secured temple premises.

The incident occurred at one of India’s most sensitive religious sites, which has remained under continuous terror threat alerts from central intelligence agencies. The suspect was apprehended by the temple’s Enforcement Squad, prompting questions about security procedures and visitor screening.

Suspect Identified as Rajasthan Resident

Authorities identified the detained individual as Rajendra Kumar, a resident of Rajasthan. According to temple officials, the incident took place at approximately 7:15 a.m. near the temple’s Baisi Pahacha (22 sacred steps), one of the most important entry points within the temple complex.

The man was dressed in what appeared to be an Indian Army uniform, complete with insignia featuring India’s National Emblem (Ashoka Lion Capital) on the shoulders.

Uniform Raised Immediate Suspicion

Temple security personnel noticed irregularities in the way the suspect was wearing the military uniform. Their observations led them to question his identity.

After a preliminary verification, officials concluded that the individual was not a serving military officer. Security personnel immediately took him into custody and handed him over to the Singhadwar Police Station for further questioning.

Authorities are now investigating how the suspect obtained the uniform and whether he intentionally attempted to impersonate a member of the armed forces.

Police Launch Detailed Investigation

Police have begun an extensive interrogation to determine:

  • Why the suspect entered the temple wearing a military uniform.
  • Whether he had any criminal or malicious intent.
  • If he acted alone or was connected to a larger network.
  • How he managed to enter the temple despite multiple layers of security.

Officials have stated that further details will emerge only after the investigation is completed.

Temple Under Constant Terror Threat

The Jagannath Temple has long been considered a high-security religious site due to repeated intelligence warnings regarding potential terrorist threats.

Central intelligence agencies have regularly advised the Odisha Police to maintain heightened vigilance around the temple because of its religious significance and the large number of pilgrims who visit every day.

The latest incident has intensified concerns over whether existing security measures are sufficient to prevent unauthorized individuals from entering sensitive areas.

Questions Raised Over Security Protocols

The incident has sparked widespread debate over how the suspect was able to pass through security checkpoints despite the temple’s strict surveillance arrangements.

The temple has multiple entry gates and security personnel stationed throughout the premises. Nevertheless, the suspect reportedly reached the area near the sacred steps before being stopped.

Temple Security Administrator Hemant Kumar Padhi said the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation and that the full facts will be known only after police complete their inquiry.

Public Demands Stronger Security Measures

The incident has generated public outrage, with devotees and local residents demanding a thorough investigation into the apparent security lapse.

Many have called for authorities to:

  • Introduce advanced screening technologies.
  • Strengthen identity verification procedures.
  • Increase surveillance and monitoring at all entry points.
  • Review existing security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Citizens are also urging investigators to determine the suspect’s actual motive and whether anyone else may have been involved.

Investigation Continues

Police continue to question the suspect while examining all available evidence. Authorities have not yet disclosed any official motive behind the impersonation.

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of maintaining robust security at one of India’s most revered religious landmarks, as officials work to ensure the safety of millions of devotees who visit the Jagannath Temple every year.
