Durg, Chhattisgarh | Putting an end to months of speculation, Chhattisgarh Education Minister Gajendra Yadav has officially announced that the names of Swami Atmanand English Medium Schools across the state will not be changed. The minister stated that all approximately 700 Swami Atmanand schools will continue to operate under their existing name.
The announcement comes amid ongoing political discussions and public speculation following the change of government in the state. Addressing the issue during a visit to Durg, the Education Minister made it clear that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has no plans to rename the schools and is instead focused on improving the quality of education.
Government Focused on Improving Education, Not Renaming Schools
Speaking to the media, Gajendra Yadav emphasized that the BJP government has been in power in Chhattisgarh for more than two and a half years, yet not a single Swami Atmanand School has been renamed.
He stated that the government’s priority is to strengthen the education system, enhance infrastructure, and improve academic standards rather than engage in symbolic changes.
“Our objective is not to change the names of schools but to improve the quality of education. All Swami Atmanand Schools in the state will continue to function under the same name,” the minister said.
Criticism of Political Name Changes
During his address, the Education Minister also criticized what he described as politically motivated renaming of public welfare schemes.
He referred to the Public Distribution System (PDS), stating that it was introduced during the tenure of former Chief Minister Dr. Raman Singh. According to the minister, changing the names of successful public initiatives solely for political reasons is inappropriate.
He asserted that the BJP government does not function with feelings of political rivalry or bias, adding that government programs are funded by public money and should always serve the interests of citizens rather than political agendas.
The minister further alleged that such politically motivated actions had been a characteristic of the Congress Party, while the current government is focused on governance and public welfare.
Background of the Swami Atmanand School Scheme
The Swami Atmanand English Medium School Scheme was one of the flagship education initiatives launched during the Congress government (2018–2023) under former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel.
The program was introduced to provide high-quality English-medium education in government schools, offering students access to improved infrastructure, modern teaching methods, and better learning opportunities at affordable costs.
Following the BJP’s victory in the state, there had been widespread speculation that the new government might rename the schools. However, the Education Minister’s latest statement has effectively ended those rumors.
