NTPC Limited Denies Reports of Nuclear Project Feasibility Study in Bihar

New Delhi: NTPC Limited has issued an official clarification dismissing recent media reports that suggested the company had begun feasibility studies for setting up nuclear power units in Bihar.

The reports had claimed that NTPC was exploring the development of two nuclear power units of 1,400 MW each in the Banka district. However, the company clarified that no feasibility study has been initiated for any nuclear power project in the state.

Preliminary Assessments, Not Formal Plans

NTPC explained that while it continuously evaluates potential opportunities and locations as part of its long-term growth strategy, any such activities are purely preliminary and exploratory in nature. These internal assessments are routine and aimed at identifying future avenues for diversification, including in the nuclear energy space.

The company emphasized that such early-stage evaluations should not be interpreted as confirmed project developments or investment decisions.

Regulatory Compliance Clarified

In its statement, NTPC also addressed regulatory concerns, noting that these exploratory exercises do not qualify as a “material event” under the provisions of the SEBI Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements Regulations 2015. Therefore, no formal disclosure was required at this stage.

The clarification aims to prevent any misinformation or speculation in the market and among stakeholders.

Commitment to Transparency

NTPC reiterated its commitment to maintaining transparency and regulatory compliance. The company assured that any significant developments or confirmed decisions regarding future projects, including in the nuclear power segment, will be disclosed promptly in accordance with applicable guidelines.

Strategic Context

As India continues to expand its energy mix and explore cleaner and more reliable power sources, nuclear energy remains a potential area of interest for long-term capacity addition. NTPC, being the country’s largest power producer, regularly assesses such opportunities as part of its broader strategic planning.

With this clarification, NTPC Limited has effectively put to rest speculation around immediate nuclear project plans in Bihar, reinforcing that any such developments remain at a conceptual and exploratory stage for now.
