Raigarh, Chhattisgarh | In a shocking case of domestic violence, a 20-year-old man allegedly murdered his mother with a shovel and then attempted to attack his father in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh. The accused was arrested within hours of the crime following swift police action.
Incident Overview
The incident took place in Rairumakhurd village under the jurisdiction of Raigarh district. According to police, the accused, Aryan Das Mahant (20), had been harboring resentment against his family, believing that his siblings were favored over him. This prolonged frustration reportedly escalated into a brutal act of violence.
Sequence of Events
On the morning of April 25, Aryan returned home and confronted his mother, Phulbai Mahant (55), near the family’s grocery shop located opposite a local petrol pump. In a sudden outburst, he allegedly dragged her outside, threw her to the ground, and attacked her repeatedly with a shovel typically used for handling cow dung.
The victim suffered fatal injuries, particularly to the neck, and died on the spot.
Immediately after the हत्या, the आरोपी reportedly turned on his father, Ganpat Das Mahant (60), and chased him with the same weapon. The father managed to escape and promptly informed the police.
Police Action
Based on the complaint filed by the father, local police registered a case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), corresponding to murder. Acting quickly, a police team led by Sub-Inspector Vijay Ekka tracked down and arrested the accused within hours.
The weapon used in the crime was recovered based on the accused’s disclosure.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shashi Mohan Singh stated that the crime appears to have been driven by emotional distress and anger stemming from perceived family neglect. He emphasized that crimes committed in moments of rage often lead to lifelong consequences and that the law deals strictly with such offenses.
The accused has been produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
