New Delhi: India has joined a US-led global partnership to accelerate the development of secure 6G wireless networks, marking another step in international efforts to shape the next generation of wireless communication technology.
The initiative brings together countries including the United Kingdom, Germany and Japan and aims to coordinate national 6G strategies well ahead of the technology’s expected commercial rollout and the gradual replacement of 5G networks during the 2030s.
The US Department of Commerce announced India’s participation in a post on X.
India and US Discuss Future of 6G
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and India’s Minister of State for Commerce Jitin Prasada discussed the future of 6G technology on the sidelines of the G20 Innovation Ministerial held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, last week.
The discussions come as countries increasingly focus on developing secure and resilient telecommunications infrastructure and establishing technological leadership in next-generation wireless networks.
US Launches 6G Global Call to Action
In July, the US government launched the “Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security”, which was supported by 24 other countries across Europe, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific region.
The initiative is designed to promote international cooperation on 6G development, with a particular focus on security, technological leadership and coordination among participating countries.
It also seeks to advance the objectives outlined in US President Donald Trump’s December 2025 Presidential Memorandum, “Winning the 6G Race.”
India’s 6G Vision Targets 2030
India has been working on its 6G strategy for several years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi released India’s 6G Vision document on March 22, 2023.
The vision document aims to position India as a frontline contributor to the design, development and deployment of 6G technology by 2030.
India’s participation in the new global partnership could provide an additional platform for cooperation with other major technology nations as research and standards for next-generation wireless networks continue to evolve.
Why 6G Matters
6G is expected to go beyond the capabilities of existing 5G networks, with potential applications across artificial intelligence, immersive communications, autonomous systems, advanced industrial automation and connected infrastructure.
As countries begin preparing for the post-5G era, international cooperation on technology standards, cybersecurity and network infrastructure is expected to play an increasingly important role.
India’s participation in the US-led initiative puts the country alongside several major economies working to influence the development of the global 6G ecosystem ahead of its anticipated deployment in the 2030s.
