New Delhi: Passengers traveling on the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will now have the option to enjoy non-vegetarian meals, as the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) continues to upgrade onboard services. The move applies to the Howrah–Kamakhya and Kamakhya–Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper Express trains.
According to IRCTC, the enhanced menu includes chicken-based non-vegetarian dishes along with popular Bengali and traditional Assamese cuisine. The initiative has received a warm response from passengers, particularly those from eastern and northeastern India, who welcomed the inclusion of authentic regional flavors during long-distance travel.
IRCTC stated that the decision is part of a broader effort to improve catering services and promote domestic and inbound tourism through India’s railway network. Inspired by the rich culinary heritage of Bengal and Northeast India, the onboard menu aims to deliver a distinctive regional dining experience.
“The improved meal service enhances passenger satisfaction while also showcasing local food traditions,” IRCTC said. By offering both vegetarian and non-vegetarian regional dishes, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express is setting a new benchmark for onboard dining in Indian Railways.
The Howrah–Kamakhya Vande Bharat Sleeper Express connects two culturally and spiritually significant regions of India. Fully air-conditioned and designed for long-distance overnight travel, the train emphasizes passenger comfort, modern amenities, and improved onboard services.
Last month, Assam and West Bengal received their first Vande Bharat Sleeper service. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the Howrah–Guwahati (Kamakhya) route from Malda Town railway station.
Designed to meet India’s growing transportation needs, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express offers an airline-like travel experience at affordable fares. The train reduces travel time on the Howrah–Guwahati route by approximately 2.5 hours and is expected to significantly boost religious tourism and regional travel while providing a faster, safer, and more comfortable journey for passengers.
