Tata Group, OpenAI Partner to Build 100-Megawatt AI Data Center in India

New Delhi: India’s Tata Group and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) have entered into a strategic partnership with OpenAI to establish a large-scale artificial intelligence data center in India and accelerate enterprise AI adoption globally.

As part of the collaboration, the Tata Group will build India’s first purpose-built data center optimized for next-generation AI training and inference. The project will begin with an initial capacity of 100 megawatts and is expected to scale up to one gigawatt over time, positioning India as a major hub for AI infrastructure.

The multi-dimensional partnership will focus on three key areas: enabling AI-led innovation across Tata Group companies, jointly driving AI transformation across industries worldwide, and developing advanced AI infrastructure in India.

OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman said India is uniquely positioned to shape the future of artificial intelligence. “India is already leading in AI adoption, and with its talent, ambition, and strong government support, it is well placed to help define what comes next,” Altman said, adding that the partnership aims to build AI “with India, for India, and in India.”

Under the agreement, several thousand Tata Group employees will gain access to enterprise-grade AI tools to enhance productivity and innovation. TCS will also leverage OpenAI’s advanced coding and automation capabilities to improve software engineering efficiency.

In addition, OpenAI and TCS will jointly develop industry-specific AI solutions, combining OpenAI’s advanced AI models with TCS’s deep domain expertise. The collaboration is expected to help enterprises in India and abroad deploy and scale AI solutions tailored to their business needs.

N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, described the partnership as a milestone in India’s AI journey. “This collaboration marks a significant step toward India’s vision of becoming a global AI leader. Together, we will build world-class AI infrastructure, transform industries, and equip India’s youth with skills for the AI era,” he said.

The initiative builds on TCS’s HyperVault platform, launched in 2025 to deliver secure, AI-ready data center infrastructure at scale. Powered by green energy, HyperVault is designed to support high-density, liquid-cooled data centers for hyperscalers and AI-driven organizations.

The companies said the partnership represents a major advance in India’s efforts to strengthen its AI ecosystem and expand its role as a global center for AI innovation and deployment.
