Kawardha: Students residing at the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) hostel in Kawardha have raised serious concerns over alleged mismanagement, poor food quality, and lack of proper health facilities. The hostel operates under the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya scheme. The students have submitted a written complaint to the district collector, demanding a fair and impartial inquiry against the hostel administration.
Allegations of Poor Food and Health Facilities
According to the students, the quality of food served at the hostel has deteriorated over the past few months. They allege that budget constraints are being cited to reduce food portions and quality. Students also claimed that stale and spoiled vegetables purchased days in advance are cooked and served, leading to health issues.
Several students said they often receive insufficient food, forcing them to remain hungry. One parent, Bhanupratap Chandrakar, stated that he had to personally take his daughter to a hospital after her health worsened due to inadequate nutrition at the hostel.
Students further alleged that proper medical assistance is not provided, and they are asked to visit hospitals on their own in case of illness.
Concerns Over Free Supplies and Safety
In addition to food-related issues, students complained that essential free supplies meant for hostel residents are not being distributed on time. They also expressed concern over hostel security, alleging that raising complaints leads to pressure and reprimands from the administration.
Serious allegations were also made against a Class IV employee, who has been accused of physically assaulting students. The claims have reportedly created an atmosphere of fear within the hostel.
Superintendent Denies Allegations
Hostel superintendent Jagrani Khakha has dismissed all allegations as baseless. She stated that she was recently posted at the facility and introduced stricter movement regulations for students to ensure their safety. According to her, these measures may have led to dissatisfaction among some students.
Khakha further alleged that certain staff members may be misleading the students and maintained that she is fully committed to improving hostel operations. She claimed that she personally visits the market every alternate day to procure fresh vegetables.
Probe Ordered
District Education Officer F.R. Verma confirmed that a complaint has been received and assured that an investigation will be conducted. He stated that appropriate action will be taken against those found responsible if the allegations are proven true.
The situation remains under review as authorities begin the inquiry into the students’ complaints.
