Power Grid Wins TBCB Project to Expand Transmission Network in Maharashtra

New Delhi: State-owned Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has emerged as the successful bidder under the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) route for the implementation of a major intra-state transmission project in Maharashtra, the company said in a regulatory filing.

POWERGRID informed stock exchanges that it has secured the project titled “Network Expansion Scheme in Maharashtra for Removal of Transmission Constraints in Pune Region–I (765/400 kV AIS Pune East)”. The project will be executed on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis. The Letter of Intent (LoI) for the project was received on February 11.

Project Scope and Infrastructure

The project involves the establishment of a 765/400 kV Air Insulated Substation (AIS) in Ahilyanagar district, along with the construction of 765 kV and 400 kV transmission lines across key locations in Maharashtra. In addition, the scope includes bay extension works at existing substations to integrate the new transmission infrastructure into the state grid.

Strengthening Power Reliability in Pune Region

The network expansion scheme is aimed at removing transmission bottlenecks in Pune Region–I, one of Maharashtra’s high-demand power consumption zones. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly enhance grid reliability, power transfer capability, and operational efficiency of the state’s intra-state transmission system.

The project will also support growing electricity demand driven by industrial expansion, urbanization, and infrastructure development in and around Pune, while improving overall power system stability in Maharashtra.

POWERGRID, India’s largest transmission utility, continues to play a key role in strengthening the country’s power infrastructure through competitive bidding projects, aligning with India’s long-term goals of reliable, efficient, and resilient electricity networks.
