Indian Railways Opens Emergency Quota on Amrit Bharat, Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains

New Delhi: In a major passenger-friendly move, Indian Railways has announced the introduction of an Emergency Quota (EQ) on two of its most modern train services — Amrit Bharat Express and Vande Bharat Sleeper.
The decision aims to ensure confirmed seats for travelers facing urgent and unavoidable situations.

According to a new circular issued by the Railway Board, the Emergency Quota will now be available on these premium trains, which earlier did not offer this facility. The move is expected to bring significant relief to passengers who need to travel at short notice due to medical, family, or official emergencies.

What Is the Emergency Quota?

The Emergency Quota is a special reservation category under which a limited number of seats are kept aside in each train. These seats are allotted to passengers who must travel urgently — such as in cases of serious illness, death in the family, or government duty — especially when all regular and Tatkal tickets are sold out.

Seat Allocation Details

The number of seats reserved under the Emergency Quota varies by train and class:

  • Vande Bharat Sleeper
    • Third AC (3A): 24–42 seats
    • Second AC (2A): 20–30 seats
    • First AC (1A): 4–6 seats
  • Amrit Bharat Express
    • Sleeper Class: 24 berths reserved under EQ

Who Can Apply and How?

Passengers must hold either a confirmed or waiting-list ticket (online or counter) to apply. Priority is given to:

  • Medical emergency cases (patients and attendants)
  • VIPs such as Members of Parliament, legislators, and senior officials
  • Government employees traveling on official duty

Application Process:
Applicants must submit a written request to the concerned Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) office or the Emergency Quota cell at the station, at least one day before travel or before chart preparation. Medical cases must include a doctor’s prescription or supporting documents.

Strict Checks to Prevent Misuse

Indian Railways has warned against misuse of the Emergency Quota. Authorities will verify every application thoroughly, and in some cases, passengers may receive verification calls. Any false or misleading information will lead to immediate rejection of the request.

Railway officials say the move balances passenger convenience with accountability, ensuring that the Emergency Quota benefits only those who genuinely need it.
