GE Vernova T&D India Emerges as L1 Bidder for Power Grid’s 6,000 MW HVDC Project

Company selected as the lowest bidder for design and establishment of a 6,000 MW ±800 kV HVDC terminal station to evacuate renewable power from Barmer II to South Kalamb

New Delhi : GE Vernova T&D India Limited has been declared the L1 bidder by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) for a major High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission project aimed at facilitating the evacuation of renewable power.

The company informed the stock exchanges on September 7, 2026, that it had received an intimation from POWERGRID regarding its L1 bidder status for the project.

Project Details

The project involves the design and establishment of a 6,000 MW, ±800 kV HVDC Line Commutated Converter (LCC) Terminal Station, comprising two units of 3,000 MW each.

The terminal station will be developed for the evacuation of renewable power from Barmer II to South Kalamb, supporting the transmission of renewable energy across regions.

Key Highlights

  • Project: 6,000 MW ±800 kV HVDC LCC Terminal Station
  • Configuration: 2 × 3,000 MW
  • Purpose: Renewable power evacuation from Barmer II to South Kalamb
  • Awarding Entity: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited
  • Project Type: Domestic
  • Execution Period: Multi-year project
  • Bid Status: L1 bidder
  • L1 Intimation Date: September 7, 2026

Strategic Importance of the Project

HVDC technology plays an important role in transmitting large volumes of electricity over long distances with high efficiency. Projects of this scale are particularly relevant for India’s renewable energy expansion, as generation capacity is increasingly being developed in regions with strong renewable energy potential while demand centres may be located elsewhere.

The Barmer II–South Kalamb project is therefore expected to contribute to the broader transmission infrastructure required for renewable power evacuation.

For GE Vernova T&D India, being declared the L1 bidder strengthens its position in India’s high-voltage transmission infrastructure segment and highlights the company’s participation in large-scale grid modernisation projects.

What Does L1 Bidder Mean?

Being declared the L1 bidder means the company has submitted the lowest evaluated bid in the relevant tender process.

However, L1 status does not by itself mean that the final project contract has been executed. The award and subsequent execution remain subject to the applicable contractual, regulatory and procedural requirements of the tendering authority.

GE Vernova T&D India said the project is a domestic project and is expected to be executed over multiple years.

Company Disclosure
