Dr. Hemant Sharad Pande Recommended as CMD of Western Coalfields Limited


New Delhi : In a significant development for India’s energy and mining sector, the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has recommended Dr. Hemant Sharad Pande for appointment as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL).

WCL is a Schedule ‘B’ Miniratna public sector undertaking and a key subsidiary of Coal India Limited, playing a crucial role in coal production across Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

Rigorous Selection Process

The recommendation was made during PESB Meeting No. 11/2026, held at 8:45 a.m. on Thursday. Dr. Pande emerged as the top candidate from a highly competitive field of 12 senior executives drawn from the coal, oil, railways, and engineering sectors.

Dr. Pande, 56, is currently serving as Director (Personnel) at WCL, a position he assumed on January 27, 2025. With over 35 years of experience in the coal sector, he has held key leadership roles at both WCL and South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL).

If appointed, Dr. Pande’s elevation from Director (Personnel) to CMD is expected to strengthen operational efficiency, modernize mining infrastructure, and advance sustainable and technology-driven coal production at WCL. His past role in commissioning high-capacity silo dispatch systems at the Gevra opencast mine is seen as a key asset for future modernization initiatives.

Next Steps

The PESB recommendation will now be forwarded to the Government of India for approval by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). Upon completion of vigilance clearances and formal approval, Dr. Pande is expected to assume charge as CMD, steering WCL toward its long-term energy security and sustainability goals.
