Durg, India: Tensions have risen in Devbaloda–Charoda area of Chhattisgarh following a विवाद at a local religious fair, where allegations of identity concealment by traders led to shop closures and protests from community representatives.
The incident occurred during the Mahashivratri fair in Devbaloda, where members of a Hindu organization alleged that some traders were conducting business while concealing their religious identity. Following these allegations, a municipal team reportedly shut down several shops and seized goods at the site.
Community Submits Memorandum to Administration
In response, representatives from a Muslim community group, under the banner of the Bhilai Nagar Masjid Trust, submitted a memorandum to the district administration. Delegates from around 17 mosques met the Deputy Collector in Durg, demanding legal action against those involved in alleged misconduct.
The representatives claimed that traders from their community were verbally abused and subjected to discriminatory remarks during the incident. They alleged that such actions were an attempt to disturb social harmony in the region.
“Two days ago, a family was mistreated at the fair. This has caused anger within the community. We are demanding an immediate FIR and strict action so such incidents do not happen again,” said Mohammad Rajan, a community representative.
Police Say Investigation Underway
Commenting on the situation, Satyaprakash Tiwari, City Superintendent of Police (CSP), said that a joint memorandum had been submitted by members of the community regarding the Mahashivratri fair incident.
“The matter is under investigation. If any individual is found guilty, appropriate legal action will be taken in accordance with the law,” he said.
Background of the Dispute
The controversy began after a Hindu organization accused certain traders at the fair of posing as Hindu merchants while belonging to another religion, allegedly misleading visitors. Following these claims, municipal authorities intervened, leading to the closure of some stalls.
The situation briefly escalated, creating tension at the fairgrounds, though officials said law and order was brought under control.
Call for Peace and Due Process
Community leaders emphasized that Chhattisgarh has a long-standing tradition of communal harmony and mutual respect. They urged authorities to ensure accountability through legal means and appealed for peace while the investigation continues.
District officials have stated that further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing inquiry.
