ACC Approves Six-Month Extension for West Bengal Police Chief Siddh Nath Gupta

New Delhi : The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a six-month extension in service for Siddh Nath Gupta, Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG & IGP), West Bengal.

The decision follows a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Home Affairs and will take effect beyond April 30, 2026.

Extension Granted in Public Interest

The extension has been granted in public interest through relaxation of Rule 16(1) of the AIS (DCRB) Rules, 1958, which govern service conditions for All India Services officers. Such relaxations are typically approved in cases where continuity in leadership is considered essential for administrative stability and operational effectiveness.

Ensuring Continuity in State Police Leadership

Gupta, a 1992-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the West Bengal cadre, currently heads the stateโ€™s police force. His continued tenure is expected to ensure stability in law enforcement leadership and support ongoing policing and security initiatives across the state.

The extension comes at a time when maintaining continuity in senior leadership is seen as critical for effective governance, coordination, and public safety management.

Administrative Significance

Service extensions for senior officials are relatively rare and are granted selectively, often based on operational requirements and strategic considerations. The ACCโ€™s approval underscores the governmentโ€™s confidence in Guptaโ€™s leadership and experience.

Looking Ahead

With this extension, Siddh Nath Gupta will continue to lead the West Bengal Police for an additional six months, providing continuity in command and facilitating the smooth execution of administrative and security priorities in the state.
