The resolution will urge the Centre to amend laws, including the National Medical Commission Act, to abolish the NEET system and restore medical admissions based on Class 12 board examination marks.
CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government is set to introduce a special resolution in the State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday (August 11) demanding the complete abolition of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admissions.
The resolution will be moved by Health Minister Dr. G.K. Arunjraj.
According to the proposed resolution, the NEET system is against social justice and equality and undermines the rights of states. It argues that the examination adversely affects the medical aspirations of rural students, particularly those educated through the Tamil-medium system, as well as students from economically weaker sections.
Tamil Nadu Government’s Arguments Against NEET
The resolution states that the NEET system has led to the rapid expansion of high-cost coaching centres, diverting students’ attention from the regular school curriculum.
It argues that a single entrance examination should not determine a student’s higher education prospects after 12 years of schooling.
The Tamil Nadu government also points out that the State Assembly had unanimously passed a bill in 2021 seeking exemption from NEET. However, presidential assent to the legislation has remained pending.
Concerns Over NEET 2026
The resolution also refers to alleged question-paper leaks and irregularities associated with the 2026 undergraduate NEET examination. According to the resolution, the examination was cancelled and conducted again, causing considerable mental stress among lakhs of students.
It further states that several young lives have been lost in circumstances linked to the pressure surrounding competitive examinations, resulting in students losing confidence in the existing system.
Demand for Changes to Central Laws
The Tamil Nadu government will urge the Centre to make necessary amendments to the National Medical Commission Act and other relevant laws to discontinue NEET at the national level.
The resolution will call for medical admissions to once again be conducted based on Class 12 board examination marks, as was the practice earlier.
The State government is expected to seek unanimous support for the resolution.
Another Resolution on Foreign Contribution Regulation
The Tamil Nadu government is also scheduled to introduce another special resolution urging the Central government to withdraw the Foreign Contribution Regulation Amendment Bill, 2026, in its present form.
The resolution will be moved by School Education Minister Rajmohan.
