NHPC-Backed 1,000 MW Pakal Dul Hydro Project Reaches Major Milestone with Completion of Unit-4 Rotor Installation

Kishtwar, Jammu & Kashmir : The 1,000 MW Pakal Dul Hydro Electric Project, one of India’s largest ongoing hydropower developments, has achieved a major construction milestone with the successful lowering and installation of the Unit-4 rotor, bringing the project a step closer to commercial commissioning.

The milestone was achieved on July 31, 2026, at the project site in Kishtwar district, Jammu & Kashmir, where the operation was successfully completed in the presence of senior officials from Chenab Valley Power Projects Pvt. Ltd. (CVPPL) and representatives of Voith, the contractor responsible for the project’s Electro-Mechanical (E&M) package.

Rotor Installation Completed in All Four Generating Units

With the successful installation of the Unit-4 rotor, rotor lowering has now been completed in all four generating units of the Pakal Dul Hydro Electric Project.

The completion of rotor installation represents one of the most significant phases in the mechanical installation process of a hydroelectric power plant. It paves the way for the next stages of equipment testing, commissioning, and synchronization of the generating units.

This achievement marks substantial progress toward the project’s planned commissioning during Financial Year 2026–27.

CVPPL MD Congratulates Project Team

On the occasion, Ramesh Mukhiya, Managing Director of CVPPL, congratulated the engineers, technical experts, contractors, and powerhouse teams for successfully achieving this critical engineering milestone.

He appreciated the collective efforts of the project workforce and emphasized the importance of maintaining construction momentum to ensure that all remaining activities are completed within the stipulated timeline.

Mukhiya also urged every stakeholder associated with the project to continue working collaboratively to meet the targeted commissioning schedule.

Project to Strengthen India’s Clean Energy Capacity

The Pakal Dul Hydro Electric Project is being developed by Chenab Valley Power Projects Pvt. Ltd. (CVPPL), a company promoted with the support of NHPC, India’s leading hydropower public sector enterprise.

Located on the Marusudar River in the Kishtwar district of Jammu & Kashmir, the project is expected to become a major contributor to India’s renewable energy infrastructure.

Once operational, the 1,000 MW hydropower project will:

  • Increase clean and renewable electricity generation
  • Enhance grid stability and reliability
  • Support India’s growing energy demand
  • Reduce dependence on fossil fuels

Importance of Rotor Installation

In hydroelectric power stations, the rotor is one of the most critical components of a generator. It works in conjunction with the stator to convert mechanical energy generated by water turbines into electrical power.

Successful rotor lowering requires high-precision engineering, heavy lifting equipment, and strict adherence to safety standards, making it one of the most technically demanding milestones during project construction.

The completion of rotor installation across all four units indicates that the project has entered an advanced stage of mechanical completion.

CVPPL reaffirmed its commitment to commissioning the Pakal Dul Hydro Electric Project during FY 2026–27. The company stated that it is continuously monitoring construction progress and working toward achieving all remaining milestones within the planned schedule.
