GIFT IFSC Emerging as India’s Global Gateway for International Capital Flows, Says Dr. Dipesh Shah

Gandhinagar, Gujarat | July 25, 2026: GIFT International Financial Services Centre (GIFT IFSC) is rapidly positioning itself as India’s gateway for global capital, enabling international financial transactions to be conducted from within the country instead of routing them through overseas financial hubs. According to Dr. Dipesh Shah, Executive Director (Development) of the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), GIFT IFSC is designed to strengthen India’s position in the global financial ecosystem by serving as both an “Inbound and Outbound Gateway” for international capital.

Speaking to a media delegation from Chhattisgarh during a Press Information Bureau (PIB), Raipur study tour of Gujarat, Dr. Shah explained how GIFT IFSC is transforming the way India connects with global financial markets.

Reducing Dependence on Overseas Financial Centers

Dr. Shah noted that despite India’s massive domestic economy, a significant share of its foreign currency financial transactions has traditionally been routed through international financial hubs such as Singapore, Dubai, Mauritius, London, and Dublin.

This practice has often resulted in business opportunities, financial services, and high-value jobs moving outside India.

GIFT IFSC has been established to reverse this trend by providing a globally competitive financial platform where India-related international financial activities can be carried out within the country.

An “Inbound and Outbound Gateway” for Global Capital

Explaining the concept in simple terms, Dr. Shah described GIFT IFSC as India’s “Inbound and Outbound Gateway” for global capital.

Its objectives include:

  • Attracting international investment into India.
  • Connecting Indian businesses with global financial markets.
  • Providing an internationally competitive platform for cross-border financial services.
  • Facilitating seamless global capital movement.

He emphasized that the initiative will help strengthen India’s role in international finance while creating greater economic opportunities.

Financial Transactions in 15 Foreign Currencies

One of the most significant features of GIFT IFSC is its ability to conduct financial transactions in 15 notified foreign currencies.

These include major international currencies such as:

  • US Dollar
  • Euro
  • British Pound Sterling
  • Other globally accepted foreign currencies.

This allows banks, financial institutions, and multinational companies to conduct cross-border business directly from India without relying on offshore financial centers.

Unified Regulatory Framework Simplifies Global Business

Dr. Shah highlighted that GIFT IFSC operates under a single integrated regulatory framework, making it unique compared to India’s domestic financial system.

While India’s domestic financial sector is regulated separately by different authorities for:

  • Banking
  • Capital Markets
  • Insurance

the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) acts as the single unified regulator for all international financial services operating within GIFT IFSC.

This integrated approach improves regulatory efficiency, simplifies compliance, and creates a more attractive business environment for global investors.

Comprehensive International Financial Ecosystem

GIFT IFSC now provides a platform for a wide range of international financial activities, including:

  • International Banking
  • Stock Exchanges
  • International Depositories
  • Custodial Services
  • Asset Management
  • Insurance and Reinsurance
  • Fund Management
  • Bullion Exchange
  • Corporate Treasury Centers
  • Aircraft Leasing
  • Ship Leasing
  • Payment Services
  • Global In-House Centers (GICs)

Both Indian and international financial institutions are eligible to establish operations within the ecosystem.

Supporting India’s Vision for Developed India 2047

Dr. Shah emphasized that achieving the national vision of Developed India @2047 will require substantial global capital investment.

He said GIFT IFSC can play a vital role by:

  • Mobilizing international investments into India.
  • Supporting large infrastructure and industrial projects.
  • Strengthening India’s financial competitiveness.
  • Creating a globally integrated financial marketplace.

Creating High-Quality Employment Opportunities

Beyond attracting investment, GIFT IFSC is expected to generate thousands of high-value jobs across emerging sectors, including:

  • International Financial Services
  • Financial Technology (FinTech)
  • Cybersecurity
  • Data Analytics
  • Risk Management
  • Investment Banking
  • Global Treasury Operations

Dr. Shah said these sectors will provide world-class career opportunities for Indian professionals.

Retaining India’s Global Talent

Dr. Shah also stressed the importance of reducing the migration of skilled professionals.

He observed that many talented Indian students and professionals move abroad for higher education and international careers.

By developing a globally competitive financial center within India, GIFT IFSC can provide international-standard career opportunities while allowing talented professionals to build successful careers without leaving the country.

Building India’s Global Financial Future

According to Dr. Shah, the long-term vision of GIFT IFSC is to establish India as a trusted global financial services destination, capable of handling international financial activities domestically while competing with the world’s leading financial centers.

With its multi-currency transaction capabilities, unified regulatory framework, expanding international financial ecosystem, and focus on innovation, GIFT IFSC is emerging as a strategic pillar in India’s ambition to become a global financial powerhouse and a preferred destination for international capital, investment, and financial services.
