New Delhi/Raipur | : A fresh effort by Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu has renewed hopes for resolving the long-pending Mahanadi River water dispute between the states of Chhattisgarh and Odisha. During a high-level meeting in New Delhi, Sahu met Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil to discuss ways to accelerate negotiations and achieve a fair, balanced, and sustainable settlement.
The meeting was also attended by Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti Dr. Raj Bhushan Choudhary, highlighting the Central Government’s growing focus on addressing one of eastern India’s most significant inter-state water disputes.

During the discussions, Tokhan Sahu stressed that a balanced, equitable, and time-bound resolution is essential for ensuring water security, protecting the livelihoods of millions of farmers, and supporting the long-term economic development of both states.
He urged the Ministry of Jal Shakti to direct the Central Water Commission (CWC) to quickly establish the proposed Joint Technical Committee comprising senior officials from both Chhattisgarh and Odisha. According to Sahu, technical-level dialogue is the key to finding practical and mutually acceptable solutions.
Call for Coordinated Action
The Union Minister further requested that the Jal Shakti Ministry facilitate structured and time-bound discussions among all stakeholders. He proposed preparing a mutually agreed action plan covering water sharing, river basin management, and other related issues before submitting it to the appropriate Water Disputes Tribunal for consideration.
Sahu expressed confidence that coordinated efforts by the Central Government, along with cooperation from both state governments, could pave the way for an amicable settlement that safeguards the interests of all parties while ensuring the sustainable management of the Mahanadi Basin’s water resources.

Taking immediate cognizance of the issue, Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil reportedly held a telephone conversation with Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi regarding the dispute.
Following this positive development, a high-level meeting between Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai is expected to be convened soon.
