HYDERABAD: Facebook has introduced a new feature called ‘Your Algorithm’, allowing users to customise the topics they see in their News Feed and Reels. The AI-powered tool gives users greater control over content recommendations by letting them describe their interests in their own words.
Meta announced the feature in a blog post on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. The move is aimed at making Facebook’s content recommendation system more personalised by combining users’ stated preferences with their existing activity on the platform.
What Is Facebook’s ‘Your Algorithm’ Feature?
Until now, Facebook has largely relied on users’ activity, including likes, comments and video-watching habits, to determine which posts and videos appear in their feeds.
With ‘Your Algorithm’, users can directly tell Facebook what they want to see more or less of. They can add and manage topics according to their interests, helping shape recommendations in both the News Feed and Reels.
The feature can be accessed through a dedicated section in the three-dot menu on Facebook posts.
One of its key highlights is the ability to describe preferences in natural language. Users do not need technical knowledge or special commands to explain their interests.
According to Meta, large language models (LLMs) help the system interpret the topics and intentions expressed by users and use that information to refine content recommendations.
New Options to Give Feedback on Posts
Facebook has also expanded the ways users can provide feedback on content. Users can select ‘Interested’ or ‘Not interested’ on posts and videos appearing in their Feed and Reels.
The platform may ask follow-up questions to better understand what users liked or disliked about particular content. This feedback helps Facebook adjust future recommendations based on individual preferences.
Meta says recommendation updates begin as users communicate their preferences, although the results may vary depending on their activity and the content available on the platform.
The new feature does not completely replace Facebook’s existing recommendation system. Instead, users’ stated interests are combined with signals such as likes, comments and viewing behaviour to determine which content is ranked more prominently.
How ‘Your Algorithm’ Changes Content Recommendations
The feature gives users a more direct way to influence the recommendation process rather than relying entirely on Facebook to infer their interests.
For example, someone interested in technology news, artificial intelligence and smartphones can express those preferences directly. A user who wants to see fewer entertainment videos can also provide feedback indicating that preference.
Facebook can then use these inputs alongside its existing recommendation signals to adjust the content shown to that user.
However, the feature does not mean users will see only the topics they select. Facebook’s recommendation system will continue to determine the final selection and ranking of content.
Meta Previously Introduced the Feature on Instagram
Facebook’s new tool follows the introduction of a similar feature on Instagram, where users can review topics associated with their interests and add or remove subjects to influence recommendations.
Meta is now extending this approach to Facebook, giving users another way to shape the content they encounter on its platforms.
The launch reflects Meta’s broader effort to make content recommendations more responsive to individual preferences while retaining the role of AI and user activity in determining what appears in feeds.
