New Delhi: India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has said that the global order established nearly 80 years ago is now breaking down, as the world undergoes rapid economic, political, and technological transformation. Speaking at the convocation ceremony of Symbiosis International University in Pune, Jaishankar underlined that no matter how powerful a country is, it can no longer impose its will on others.
Though he did not name any country, his remarks are being widely seen as a clear message to dominant global powers, particularly in the context of current geopolitical developments and leadership in the United States.
Collapse of the Old Global System
Jaishankar stated that it has become increasingly difficult to define today’s world with a fixed framework because change is happening fast and on multiple fronts.
“The global order that was created 80 years ago is clearly fraying,” he said, adding that this shift is driven largely by the policies and politics of major powers themselves.
Rise of a Multipolar World
Highlighting the emergence of multiple centers of power, Jaishankar emphasized that the era of unipolar dominance is over.
He said that power and influence are now distributed among several nations, creating a natural balance and competition in global affairs.
“No country, however powerful, can run the world entirely on its own terms anymore,” he asserted.
Role of Technology and Globalization
The External Affairs Minister pointed out that technology has played a crucial role in reshaping globalization, balance of power, and multipolarity. According to him, globalization has fundamentally changed how nations think, produce, and compete.
For countries like India, he said, keeping pace with technology requires large-scale, modern manufacturing and innovation-driven growth.
Message for the Future
Jaishankar’s remarks underline India’s worldview of a balanced, multipolar international system, where cooperation replaces coercion and no single nation dominates global decision-making.
