Why Raipur, the Capital of Chhattisgarh, Should Have a Woman City Congress President

Raipu:  The capital of Chhattisgarh, is politically the pulse of the entire state. The message sent from here resonates across the province. Yet, ironically, despite repeated promises to promote active participation of women in both governance and the party organization, Raipur has never had a woman city president of the Congress party.

👉🏻 Congress Policy vs. Ground Reality

In February 2023, during the Raipur convention, the Congress party amended its constitution to reserve 50% of all organizational positions for women as well as for youth under 50 years of age. Priyanka Gandhi’s slogan — “I am a girl, I can fight” — became a symbol of women’s leadership potential and political participation. Unfortunately, in a key city like Raipur, this slogan has yet to be translated into reality.

👉🏻 Why Women’s Participation is Essential

Women have long been active in Raipur’s political scene at the organizational and public engagement levels. From booth to block level, female Congress workers have consistently worked among the people. Yet, when it comes to leadership positions like the city president, men dominate the top posts. This not only contradicts the party’s declared policies but also sidelines half of the population.

👉🏻 Learning from BJP’s Women-Focused Strategy

On the other hand, the BJP in recent years has engaged women through emotionally and economically appealing initiatives like the “Mahtari Vandan Scheme.” If the Congress wants to secure women’s votes and emotional support, it must move beyond slogans and ensure real representation in leadership roles.

👉🏻 Sending a Message Through Leadership in the Capital

Appointing an active, organization-connected woman as the city president in Raipur would have an impact far beyond the city:

It would send a positive and progressive message across the state.

It would boost the morale and confidence of women party workers.

Female voters could play a decisive role in upcoming municipal, assembly, and parliamentary elections.

💥 The Demand of Raipur’s Women

Chhattisgarh has completed 25 years as a state, and throughout this period, Raipur has never had a woman city president. As a result, many women workers and councilors are now voicing a clear demand:

> “This time, Congress should appoint an active, grassroots-connected woman as the city president in Raipur.”

This move would not only align with the party’s policies but also strengthen its organizational base at the grassroots level.

Conclusion:

If Congress wants to firmly establish its roots in Chhattisgarh, it must show trust in half the population. By appointing a woman president in Raipur, the party can demonstrate that it believes in equality in leadership, not just slogans.
