What Is the Modern Track Detection Device (MSDAC)? How It Will Make Train Travel Faster, Safer, and More Comfortable

New Delhi:
Indian Railways is set to significantly enhance train safety and passenger experience with the rollout of automatic signaling systems and modern track detection technology across key railway sections starting March 2026. The initiative aims to reduce delays, improve operational efficiency, and provide a smoother and safer journey for passengers.

According to railway officials, automatic signaling systems will become operational on the Morena–Sikroda–Hitampur section by February 2026 and on the Dailwara–Lalitpur–Jiron section, including Lalitpur yard remodeling, by March 2026. Once operational, trains on these routes will be able to run faster while maintaining high safety standards.

How Automatic Signaling Improves Rail Travel

With automatic signaling in place, trains can operate at shorter intervals, improving line capacity and on-time performance. The system significantly reduces dependence on manual operations, thereby lowering the risk of human error and making train movement more reliable and secure.

A senior railway official said the new system will allow trains to move safely in less time, improve punctuality, and enhance overall passenger confidence. Parts of the project have already been successfully commissioned on the Sithouli–Gwalior–Birlanagar section, delivering measurable improvements in safety and efficiency.

Modern Track Detection Devices Installed

To further strengthen safety, Indian Railways has installed 49 Modern Track Detection Devices, known as Multi Section Digital Axle Counters (MSDAC), across these sections. These devices precisely track train positions, ensuring accurate signaling and minimizing the chances of operational disruptions.

In addition, 16 signals have been upgraded to four-aspect signaling, providing locomotive pilots with clearer and earlier indications. This allows for better speed control, smoother braking, and a more comfortable ride for passengers.

Expanded Coverage on Major Rail Routes

During the current financial year, automatic signaling has been implemented across 14 block sections spanning 104.15 kilometers on the busy Delhi–Chennai main line. With the latest upgrades, the entire 218-kilometer stretch from Dailwara to Morena is now fully equipped with automatic signaling, delivering improved capacity, safety, and punctuality across the corridor.

What Is MSDAC and Why It Matters

MSDAC, or Multi Section Digital Axle Counter, is an advanced signaling solution designed to ensure uninterrupted train operations, especially during adverse weather conditions such as heavy monsoon rains.

During monsoons, waterlogging can disrupt traditional track circuits, often leading to signal failures and train delays. MSDAC systems are installed parallel to existing track circuits and act as a reliable backup, ensuring accurate train detection even when tracks are flooded.

How MSDAC Works

The MSDAC system detects the number of axles entering and exiting a section of track to confirm whether the line is clear or occupied. Unlike conventional systems, it remains unaffected by water on the tracks, making it particularly effective during heavy rainfall. This ensures smoother operations, enhanced safety, and fewer delays during challenging weather conditions.

Boost to Sustainable and Regional Development

Railways remain one of the most energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable modes of transport. Improved signaling and safety systems not only enhance passenger comfort but also strengthen regional connectivity. Passenger trains play a vital role in supporting local economies by connecting towns, small cities, markets, and workplaces.

By offering a reliable alternative to road transport, especially for short-distance travel, upgraded rail services help reduce traffic congestion, fuel consumption, and carbon emissions. As a result, modern rail infrastructure supports inclusive growth and balanced regional development while delivering a safer and more dependable travel experience.
