New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget for 2026-27 in Parliament on Sunday, February 1, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said on Monday.
The Budget session of Parliament will commence on January 28 with President Droupadi Murmu addressing members of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha assembled in the Lok Sabha chamber. Following the President’s address, the Finance Minister is expected to table the Economic Survey in both Houses, outlining the state of the economy ahead of the Budget presentation.
Par revealed that the Budget session will be held in two phases and will continue until April 2. The first phase will conclude on February 13, after which Parliament will reconvene on March 9 for the second phase of the session.
This will be the first occasion since 2017 that the Union Budget is being presented on a Sunday. In 2017, the government advanced the Budget presentation to February 1 from the last working day of February, a move aimed at ensuring timely implementation of Budget proposals from the beginning of the financial year on April 1.
February 1 this year also coincides with the birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas, the 15th-century saint and social reformer, which is observed as a government holiday in several States.
Prior to 2017, the Union Budget was traditionally presented on the last working day of February, and if February 28 or 29 fell on a Sunday, the presentation would take place a day earlier. The shift to February 1 marked a significant procedural change in the Budget calendar to align fiscal planning with the start of the new financial year.
