Russia–Ukraine War Update: Kyiv Shaken by Massive Drone and Missile Barrage, Energy Infrastructure Hit

Kyiv : Ukraine’s capital and several regions across the country were rocked overnight after Russia launched one of its largest aerial assaults in recent months, firing more than 300 drones and missiles, Ukrainian authorities said on Sunday.

According to Ukraine’s Air Force, the attack involved 297 drones and 50 missiles of various types. Air defense systems intercepted or disabled 274 drones and 33 missiles, while the remaining weapons struck 14 locations across the country. Three missiles were reported missing from radar tracking.

Ukraine’s emergency services confirmed that one person was killed in the Kyiv region, while eight others—including a child trapped under rubble—were rescued alive. The strikes caused extensive damage in five districts on the outskirts of Kyiv, triggering fires and destroying residential and infrastructure facilities. Rescue teams worked through the night in villages such as Putrivka in the Fastiv district to clear debris and search for survivors.

Russian forces also targeted energy and power facilities in the southern Odesa region, sparking major fires that were later brought under control. Ukrainian officials said the continued strikes on the energy grid have left civilians struggling without electricity and heating during harsh winter conditions.

The full-scale war, now entering its fourth year, continues despite intensified international diplomatic efforts led by the United States in 2025. Ukrainian officials say Russia has increasingly focused on crippling the country’s energy infrastructure to pressure civilians.

In western Ukraine, a separate explosion in Lviv killed one person and injured at least 25 others. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a Telegram post that the incident was not linked to Russian air strikes, adding that one suspect has been arrested.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its air defense systems destroyed 86 Ukrainian drones overnight. In the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Luhansk, Moscow-installed officials reported that Ukrainian drones struck an oil depot, injuring a security guard and igniting fuel storage tanks.

As aerial attacks intensify on both sides, the conflict shows no immediate signs of de-escalation, with civilians continuing to bear the brunt of the war’s impact.
