New Delhi — RailTel Corporation of India Ltd announced Thursday that it has secured two major government contracts in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, with a combined value exceeding ₹217 crore (approximately $26 million). The developments were disclosed through regulatory filings under India’s market norms.
Major Education Contract Under PM SHRI Program
RailTel has been awarded a ₹168.75 crore (about $20 million) contract by the Bihar Education Project Council. The project is part of the PM SHRI scheme, a federal initiative aimed at upgrading government schools into model institutions.
Under the agreement, RailTel will serve as an implementation partner responsible for enhancing the quality of education in selected public schools. The scope includes deploying digital infrastructure, smart learning tools, and integrated services designed to improve student outcomes and modernize classroom environments.
The project is scheduled for completion by September 30, 2026, and the work order was officially received on March 18.
Cybersecurity Project for Power Utilities
In a separate development, RailTel secured a ₹48.38 crore (around $5.8 million) contract from North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd. The project involves setting up a Cyber Security Operations Centre (CSOC) for both NBPDCL and the South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd.
The initiative will focus on strengthening digital defenses for critical power infrastructure, including continuous monitoring, threat detection, and response systems. RailTel will also handle maintenance of IT and operational technology systems for a five-year period.
The cybersecurity project is expected to be completed by January 17, 2027, with the Letter of Acceptance issued on March 18.
Strategic Growth Beyond Telecom
These new contracts mark another step in RailTel’s diversification strategy beyond its traditional telecom infrastructure business. The company has increasingly focused on digital services such as ed-tech and cybersecurity solutions, particularly for government and public-sector clients.
Industry analysts say the new deals will significantly strengthen RailTel’s order book and provide stable revenue visibility over the next one to two years, as India accelerates digital transformation across education and critical infrastructure sectors.
