Police Crack Down on Illegal Mahua Liquor Operations in Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund District


Mahasamund, India |Police in Mahasamund district have intensified their crackdown on illegal liquor production, seizing large quantities of illicit mahua alcohol and arresting multiple accused under a special enforcement drive.

Acting on the directions of the Superintendent of Police, teams from Saraipali, Basna, Patewa, and Bagbahara police stations conducted coordinated raids at several locations, including Bagaijor, Jhalpali, Padridih, Savitripur, Harnadadar (near a pond area), and Pachri villages.

During the operation, police seized 445 liters of illegal mahua liquor and 28.26 liters of locally brewed country-made plain liquor. In addition, authorities destroyed nearly 1,380 kilograms of fermented mahua mash, which was being used for the illegal brewing process.

Officials also confiscated a large quantity of equipment used in liquor manufacturing, including utensils, gas stoves, gas cylinders, bamboo distillation pipes, plastic drums, and other materials. A motorcycle allegedly used for transporting the illegal liquor was also seized.

Arrests and Legal Action

A total of 10 individuals were arrested and booked under Section 34(2) of the Excise Act across multiple cases registered at different police stations.

  • Saraipali Police arrested four accused and seized 220 liters of mahua liquor along with a motorcycle.
  • Basna Police arrested three accused and confiscated 45 liters of mahua liquor.
  • Bagbahara Police arrested one accused and seized 65 pouches of country-made plain liquor.
  • Patewa Police arrested two accused and seized 180 liters of mahua liquor and 16.56 liters of plain liquor, along with brewing equipment.

Total Seizure Value

According to police estimates, the total value of the seized liquor, vehicle, and equipment is approximately ₹141,560 (about USD 1,700).

Police Statement

Police officials stated that the campaign against illegal liquor production and narcotics will continue across the district. “Such activities pose serious health and social risks. Strict action will be taken against anyone involved in illegal brewing or distribution,” an official said.

Authorities have warned that surveillance and enforcement efforts will be further intensified in rural and forest-adjacent areas in the coming days.
