New Delhi, India: State-run oil companies have dismissed rumors of an impending petrol and diesel shortage in India, assuring the public that fuel supplies across the country remain stable despite rising tensions in the Middle East.
Leading refiners Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) issued statements clarifying that reports of a fuel crisis are misleading and based on rumors. According to the companies, their supply chains are operating normally and there is no shortage of petrol or diesel anywhere in the country.
Panic Buying Triggered by Rumors
In recent days, speculation linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East has spread across social media, prompting concerns about potential disruptions in global oil supplies. The rumors led to panic buying at fuel stations in several cities, with long lines reported at some pumps.
In response, the oil companies urged citizens not to rely on unverified social media posts and asked them to avoid unnecessary crowding at petrol stations.
India’s Energy Security Remains Strong
Government sources say India’s fuel supply situation remains secure. The country currently maintains around 50 days of energy reserves, including roughly 25 days of crude oil reserves and another 25 days of refined petroleum products.
Officials also noted that the government has taken steps to safeguard domestic supply. Oil companies have been advised to prioritize the domestic market, including limiting exports of petroleum products when necessary to ensure adequate availability within India.
Diversified Imports Reduce Risk
India has also diversified its oil import sources in recent years. Analysts say the country now imports about 20% of its crude oil from Russia, which helps reduce dependence on the Middle East region.
Authorities emphasized that there is currently no plan to introduce fuel rationing or increase prices due to supply concerns. Refineries have also been instructed to boost production of LPG to ensure uninterrupted supply of cooking gas.
Officials say the rush at petrol pumps is driven purely by rumors rather than any real shortage, and they continue to closely monitor the situation while maintaining normal fuel distribution nationwide.
