MAHASAMUND — Police in Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund district have launched an extensive security and enforcement drive to ensure peaceful celebrations during the upcoming Holi festival, officials said Tuesday.
The operation is being carried out under the supervision of the Superintendent of Police, Mahasamund, with a strong focus on maintaining law and order and cracking down on illegal liquor activities.
Heavy Police Deployment Across the District
According to the district police, approximately 350 personnel have been deployed across Mahasamund. The security arrangements include:
- 75 fixed checkpoints
- 15 patrolling units
- 38 helpline teams
- 5 Anti-Dacoity (AD) squads
Police have also conducted flag marches, foot patrols, and motorcycle patrols in sensitive and crowded areas across all police station jurisdictions.
Crackdown on Illegal Liquor
In the past five days, police teams conducted raids in 106 villages and destroyed nearly 3,000 kilograms of fermented mahua (used to produce country liquor).
Under the ongoing anti-illicit liquor campaign, authorities seized 4,233.110 liters of illegal liquor valued at approximately ₹10.53 lakh (about $127,000).
A total of 290 cases were registered under the Excise Act, and action was taken against 339 individuals. Additionally, 35 people were booked for consuming or serving alcohol in public places.
Preventive Action and Monitoring
Police summoned 77 individuals categorized as habitual offenders or under surveillance and issued warnings. Preventive action under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was taken against 22 individuals for potential breach of peace.
Furthermore, 35 individuals were placed under bond to ensure good behavior during the festival period.
Traffic Enforcement Intensified
To maintain smooth traffic flow during Holi celebrations, authorities also stepped up enforcement under the Motor Vehicles Act. Action was taken against 700 individuals for traffic violations.
Public Appeal
Mahasamund district police have urged residents to celebrate Holi responsibly, follow traffic rules, avoid forcibly applying colors, and cooperate with law enforcement personnel to maintain peace and communal harmony.
Officials emphasized that strict monitoring and enforcement will continue throughout the festive period to ensure a safe and secure environment for all.
