Gaurela–Pendra–Marwahi: Just days before the Holi festival, police in Chhattisgarh uncovered a major case of illegal liquor smuggling. Acting on a tip-off, the Gaurela Police intercepted a large consignment of liquor being transported illegally from Madhya Pradesh.
Officials said the smugglers used a luxury vehicle to avoid suspicion. The liquor was reportedly moved from Kadamsara village in Madhya Pradesh to the Nevri Navapara area under Gaurela police station limits.
Liquor Worth Over ₹1.5 Lakh Seized
Police seized liquor valued at approximately ₹156,250 (about USD 1,900). A Bolero SUV used for transportation and a motorcycle allegedly used for reconnaissance were also confiscated. The total value of seized goods and vehicles is estimated at ₹626,000 (around USD 7,500).
Three Arrested
Three suspects—Ram Singh, Babua Ram, and Rishi Kumar, all residents of Nevri Navapara—were arrested at the scene. Authorities have registered a case against them under Sections 34(2) and 59(a) of the Chhattisgarh Excise Act and Section 179 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused are being sent to judicial custody.
Festive Demand Triggers Smuggling
Police officials noted that illegal liquor smuggling typically spikes ahead of festivals like Holi due to increased demand. Preliminary investigations suggest the consignment was intended for sale during the festivities. Authorities are also probing whether the arrested individuals are part of a larger interstate smuggling network.
Police have confirmed that enforcement drives will continue, especially in border areas, to curb illegal liquor trade during the festive season.
