Kolkata, India: A delegation of Japanese academics met senior leadership of Coal India Limited to discuss cooperation on energy transition and responsible mine closure, highlighting growing international collaboration in the mining sector.

The meeting took place at Coal India’s corporate headquarters in Kolkata and was attended by the company’s Chairman B. Sairam, Director (HR) Vinay Ranjan, and Director (Business Development) Asheesh Kumar.

The Japanese academic delegation included experts from several universities, led by Keiichi Satoh of Hitotsubashi University. Other members included Takashi Nakazawa from Toyo University, Tomoyuki Tatsumi of Toyohashi SOZO Junior College, and Atsushi Nozawa from Tokyo Keizai University. The delegation also included Pradip Swarnakar from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.

Focus on Just Transition

During the meeting, both sides discussed the concept of “just transition,” which refers to ensuring that communities and workers dependent on coal mining are supported as the global energy sector shifts toward cleaner alternatives.

The Japanese scholars shared best practices from Japan’s experience in mine closure, environmental restoration, and the repurposing of former mining sites for new economic activities.

Collaboration With IIT Kanpur

Coal India officials highlighted the company’s ongoing collaboration with the Just Transition Centre at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, which is working on developing frameworks for sustainable mine closure and land rehabilitation.

Experts said such international academic exchanges could help India adopt more sustainable mining practices while ensuring that economic and social impacts on mining communities are minimized.

The discussions are expected to support Coal India’s long-term efforts to manage mine closures responsibly while aligning with broader global goals for energy transition and environmental sustainability.
