Former India Women’s Cricket Captain Mithali Raj Inspires at SECL’s International Women’s Day Event

Bilaspur, India: A grand celebration of International Women’s Day 2026 was organized at the headquarters of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), where former Indian women’s cricket team captain Mithali Raj shared her inspiring journey and key lessons on success with employees and officials.

The event, held at the SECL Auditorium under the banner of WIPS (Women in Public Sector), witnessed the participation of a large number of women officers and employees from various departments.

Padma Shri and Arjuna Award recipient Mithali Raj attended the program as the keynote speaker. During a fireside chat moderated by SECL Director (Human Resources) Biranchi Das, she emphasized that hard work, discipline, and consistent practice are the true keys to success.

Reflecting on the evolution of women’s cricket, Raj said the sport has come a long way and now enjoys recognition and respect comparable to men’s cricket. She noted that when she began her career, opportunities for women athletes were limited and creating space for themselves in professional sports was challenging.

“Staying mentally strong, pushing your limits, and facing challenges head-on were essential for progress during that time,” Raj said. She also highlighted the importance of discipline, dedication, and regular training in achieving long-term success.

Encouraging young people, especially women, Raj urged them to stay committed to their dreams. “If you are dedicated to your goals and strive to improve yourself every day, success will eventually follow,” she said.

The event was attended by SECL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Harish Duhan as the chief guest, along with Shashi Duhan, president of the Shraddha Mahila Mandal. Several senior officials including directors and department heads were also present.

Addressing the gathering, Duhan said that women are increasingly taking on leadership roles across sectors and emphasized SECL’s commitment to promoting women’s empowerment within the organization.

He highlighted several initiatives by SECL, including the establishment of Coal India’s first fully women-operated dispensary, a women-managed central store unit, and the Sushrut scheme under corporate social responsibility that supports aspiring doctors.

Duhan also announced that SECL plans to launch “Project Dharashakti” this year. The initiative will provide skill training and employment opportunities tailored for women joining SECL as landowners’ dependents or recruits, with a dedicated team being formed to implement the program.

A special highlight of the event was the release of a special supplement on SECL’s women empowerment initiatives, published in collaboration with The Times of India, which will be distributed with the newspaper.

Women officers and employees were also honored for their achievements in various competitions, while colorful cultural performances added enthusiasm and energy to the celebration.
