BEMETARA, Chhattisgarh: Police in Bemetara have arrested a man who allegedly posed as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and cheated people by promising government jobs and official favors.
According to police, the accused, identified as Rohit Kumar, is a resident of Uttar Pradesh and has studied only up to Class 10. Despite this, he allegedly introduced himself as an IAS officer and targeted local residents with false assurances of employment, transfers, and access to government welfare schemes.
Officials said Rohit Kumar had been living in a rented house in the Devkar area for the past year and remained active in the district for several months. During this period, he reportedly collected more than ₹2 lakh from at least three victims under the pretext of arranging government jobs.
The arrest was made by Devkar Police following specific instructions from senior officers. During the operation, police recovered several items allegedly used by the accused to impersonate a senior government official.
A police official said the investigation is ongoing to determine whether more victims were cheated and if any accomplices were involved in the fraud. Legal proceedings have been initiated against the accused under relevant sections of law.
Police have urged citizens to remain cautious and verify credentials before giving money to anyone claiming influence in government recruitment or administrative matters.
