New Delhi: In a major New Year relief for Delhi residents, the Delhi government led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced free distribution of packed sugar for 15 months. The decision was approved in a recent Delhi Cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister.
Under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), all eligible cardholders will receive one kilogram of sugar per month free of cost from January 2026 to March 2027. The sugar will be distributed in sealed, branded packets, ensuring quality, hygiene, and accurate weight.
Speaking on the occasion, CM Rekha Gupta said that welfare of the poor remains the top priority of the Delhi government. She added that this initiative is a strong step toward ensuring food security and dignity for the economically weaker sections.
Branded and Hygienic Sugar Packs
According to officials, sugar is currently distributed in open form through fair price shops, which often leads to issues such as dust, moisture, contamination, and underweight distribution. With the introduction of packed and branded sugar, these problems will be eliminated.
The move will ensure:
- Proper weight and quality
- Improved hygiene and safe storage
- Greater convenience for beneficiaries
Cabinet’s Key Decision
The cabinet noted that providing sugar in sealed packets will enhance transparency and trust in the public distribution system. This initiative reflects the Delhi government’s continued commitment to pro-poor and welfare-oriented policies.
The scheme is expected to benefit thousands of AAY families across the national capital, offering much-needed relief amid rising living costs.
