Raipur — Speculation is growing in administrative and political circles following the empanelment of senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Amit Kumar for appointment to posts at the Additional Director General (ADG) level or equivalent in the Government of India.
A 1998-batch IPS officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre, Kumar is currently serving as Additional Director General (Intelligence) in the state police. His recent empanelment by the central government has sparked discussions about a possible move to a key role in a central investigative agency.
According to sources in administrative circles in Raipur and New Delhi, Kumar’s strong service record, extensive investigative experience, and previous work with central agencies have made him a strong contender for an important position at the national level. Some officials believe he could be considered for the post of Special Director in the Enforcement Directorate, although no official announcement has been made.
The central government recently approved the empanelment of 30 IPS officers from the 1998 batch for appointment to ADG-level or equivalent positions in the Government of India. Kumar’s inclusion in the list is being viewed as a significant milestone in his career and strengthens the possibility of his central deputation.
Since assuming charge as ADG (Intelligence) of the Chhattisgarh Police in January 2024, Kumar has been responsible for overseeing the state’s internal security framework, intelligence coordination, and monitoring sensitive law-and-order matters.
Over the course of his career, he has served as Superintendent of Police in several key districts, including Raipur, Rajnandgaon, Bijapur, Janjgir-Champa, and Durg. His leadership in Naxal-affected regions has also been widely acknowledged within policing circles.
Kumar has previously served on central deputation with the Central Bureau of Investigation as a Joint Director, where he led several high-profile investigations.
Known for his disciplined approach and professional integrity, Kumar is regarded as one of the most respected officers in the Chhattisgarh cadre. With his empanelment now confirmed, many observers believe it could pave the way for a larger national role in the near future.
While the final decision rests with the central government, the development is already being seen as a major step forward in Kumar’s distinguished policing career.
