Bilaspur, India |A 26-year-old woman has been arrested in the central Indian city of Bilaspur after a police cyber investigation allegedly revealed that she created fake Instagram accounts, sent obscene messages to herself, and filed a false police complaint in an attempt to defame her former boyfriend.
The accused, identified as Preeti Suryavanshi, was produced before a local court and subsequently remanded to judicial custody, according to police officials.
Cyber Investigation Uncovers the Truth
The case began on May 15, 2026, when Sanjay Ratre, a resident of Tifra, filed a complaint at Torwa Police Station. He alleged that someone had created a fake Instagram profile using his identity to send obscene, threatening, and defamatory messages, severely damaging his social reputation.
Police registered a criminal case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act, before launching a detailed cyber forensic investigation.
Using digital evidence, social media account records, IP tracking, and technical analysis, investigators traced the operation of the fake Instagram account to Preeti Suryavanshi, who lives near Shiv Temple in the Torwa area.
Police Say the Woman Filed a False Complaint
During the investigation, police made another significant discovery.
Officials found that on January 1, 2026, the same woman had previously filed a complaint claiming that she was being blackmailed and receiving obscene photographs from an Instagram account allegedly operated by Sanjay Ratre.
However, forensic analysis reportedly showed that the account used to send those messages was also created and operated by the accused herself.
According to investigators, she allegedly sent the messages to her own mobile phone, captured screenshots as evidence, and then submitted those images to police to support her complaint.
Former Relationship Led to Alleged Revenge Plot
Police said the investigation indicates that the two individuals were previously involved in a romantic relationship. After the relationship ended, the accused allegedly created fake social media profiles in her former partner’s name in an attempt to damage his reputation and falsely implicate him in criminal activities.
Authorities believe the scheme was carefully planned to portray the victim as someone involved in online harassment, blackmail, and the distribution of obscene content.
Digital Evidence Played a Key Role
Investigators emphasized that digital forensic evidence, including online account activity, technical logs, and electronic records, played a crucial role in exposing the alleged deception.
Police stated that the investigation into the seized digital devices and other electronic evidence is still ongoing.

Law enforcement officials noted that the case demonstrates how fake social media identities, fabricated digital evidence, and false complaints can ultimately be uncovered through modern cybercrime investigation techniques.
