Indigenously designed and built ‘Mangrol’ will strengthen the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities in shallow and coastal waters
Kochi: Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has delivered ‘Mangrol’, the third vessel in a series of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), to the Indian Navy.
The delivery marks another significant milestone in India’s efforts to strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing and maritime security capabilities under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Delivery Protocol Signed
The Delivery Protocol for the vessel was signed by Dr. Harikrishnan S, Director (Operations), Cochin Shipyard Limited, and Commander U Sharan Kumar, Commanding Officer (Designate) of Mangrol.
The ceremony was attended by Shri Jose VJ, Chairman and Managing Director of Cochin Shipyard Limited, Cmde Piyush Badoni, Chief Regional Officer, Headquarters Western Naval Command, along with senior officials from the Indian Navy and Cochin Shipyard.
Advanced Anti-Submarine Warfare Capabilities
Designed and constructed indigenously by Cochin Shipyard, Mangrol has been equipped with advanced systems designed to detect, track and counter underwater threats in shallow and coastal waters.
The vessel is expected to enhance the Indian Navy’s ability to monitor and respond to underwater threats in the littoral zone, where conventional deep-sea anti-submarine warfare platforms may face operational limitations.
The ASW SWC vessels are specifically intended to strengthen the Navy’s capabilities in shallow coastal waters, providing an additional layer of protection against underwater threats.
Boost to Aatmanirbhar Bharat
The delivery of Mangrol represents an important step in India’s drive towards greater self-reliance in defence production and indigenous shipbuilding.
With the vessel designed and built domestically, the project contributes to the development of India’s naval manufacturing ecosystem and strengthens the country’s capability to produce specialised warships for the Indian Navy.
The programme also demonstrates the growing role of Indian shipyards in meeting the Navy’s requirements for modern maritime platforms.
Five More Vessels Under Construction
Mangrol is the third vessel of the eight-vessel ASW Shallow Water Craft series being built by Cochin Shipyard for the Indian Navy.
The remaining five vessels are currently at various stages of construction at the shipyard.
Once completed and inducted, the entire series is expected to further expand the Indian Navy’s capabilities for detecting and responding to underwater threats in India’s coastal and littoral waters.
